She did not tell anyone.

She had considered telling her sister. She had considered writing it down in the notebook so she could keep a record of what had happened. She had considered driving back to the parking lot on the way in Wednesday morning to see if the man was still there in daylight, at 7:15.

She did none of these. She did what she always did with the things she could not file. She left them on the counter of her attention and waited to see if they went away.

The card had been in her bag. The card was no longer in her bag. She had, at some point between Sunday night and Tuesday evening, either lost the card or had it removed from her possession. Both possibilities existed. She was choosing, for the time being, to hold both of them without picking one.

She went to work Wednesday morning at 7:58. Her coffee was on the left side of the desk. Her notebook was open. The notebook still smelled like flowers. She had stopped noticing.

Karen appeared at the edge of her cube at 9:12.

Karen had a mug in one hand and a printout in the other. The printout was Blake’s. Karen had circled three things on it with red pen. She was on her way to Blake’s cube. She had stopped at Genny’s on the way.

“Got plans Friday.”

Dinah Kovar had run four hundred of these and could read a house in an afternoon.

It was a skill and she did not think of it as one. You walked the rooms and the rooms told you. The shoes told you how far someone had walked in the last ten years. The kitchen told you whether anyone else ate there. The photographs told you when the life had been busiest, because the busy years were the years nobody took pictures. By the second day she could usually say more about a person than their family could, which she had learned not to mention, because it upset them.

Ruth Ellery, eighty-eight, had lived in the house forty-six years. She had taught fourth grade at a school two miles away. Her husband had died in the nineties and she had not remarried and had not moved and had not, from the look of the second bedroom, ever considered doing anything else with it. She read. She had a chair with a lamp behind it and a rut in the carpet where the chair had been for decades. She kept a garden until she could not, and then she kept a smaller one.

The house read clean. Dinah priced it in a day and a half.

She found the soap on the second afternoon.

It was not a hoard. That was the first thing she noted, because she had seen hoards, and this was not that. There was no stockpiling, no panic, no wall of the same thing bought in a bad year. There was soap in the bathroom cabinet, which was normal. There was soap in the linen closet, three bars, which was normal. There was soap on a basement shelf, in a wooden crate that had been sized for it at some point by somebody, and the crate held maybe two years’ worth, and it was arranged by date.

All of it was Halloran.

The bars in the cabinet were current. The bars in the linen closet were from the last few seasons. The bars in the basement went back. Dinah pulled one out of the wrap far enough to read the stamp and put it back. Some of the scents on the labels were not scents she had ever seen in a store. The vessels, the refillable ones, were stacked on the shelf below, and she counted four different manufacturing generations of them and they were all, allowing for the printing, the same shape.

On the shelf beside the crate was a shoebox of delivery slips.

Dinah went through it because that was the job. Paper had to be sorted, shredded, or thrown. The slips were in order, oldest at the bottom, and there were a great many of them, and they ran back forty-six years without a gap. One address. One product line. Same cadence, the whole way.

She priced the soap as a lot and the crate separately and did not think about it again.

The collector came at seven forty on Saturday, twenty minutes before the sale opened, which happened, and which Dinah usually turned away.

His name was Martin Sedlak. He was maybe sixty, in a good coat, extremely polite. He said he had seen the listing photograph. He said the photograph showed the bathroom, and that the cabinet door in the photograph was open about four inches, and that four inches had been enough.

Dinah let him in, which she would think about later.

He did not ask where the bathroom was. He went to it. He opened the cabinet and made a small sound and then he was very quiet for a while, and when Dinah came to check on him he had three bars laid out on the edge of the sink in an order that meant something to him.

“This one is from before the reformulation of the wrap,” he said. “Not the soap. The wrap. Nineteen eighty-eight or eighty-nine. See the seam.” He turned it. “The soap never reformulated. That is the entire point of the soap.”

Dinah said the basement had more.

She watched him go down the stairs and she watched him find the crate and she watched a sixty-year-old man in a good coat sit down on a concrete floor.

He knew the scents. He named them off the labels before he read the labels, and he was right every time, and Dinah checked. He knew which years the vessel changed and what changed about it, which was nothing, he said, that was the thing, four redesigns of the printing on a shape that had not moved a millimeter in a century. He knew the company had never named its supplier. He knew the formula had not changed since nineteen four. He said all of this the way a man recites a thing he has recited before to people who did not want to hear it.

“You know why they can’t change it,” he said.

Dinah said she did not.

“There’s a contract,” Sedlak said. “It’s not a trade secret. A trade secret you can change, you just don’t. This one they cannot. It’s above the company. It’s older than the company, and every part of it is a rule about not telling anyone.” He was holding a bar in each hand. “Now ask yourself what kind of organization has a formula it is not permitted to alter, a supplier it is not permitted to name, a vessel it is not permitted to redraw, employees who will not discuss any of it, and customers who buy the same thing for fifty years and never once try anything else.”

Dinah asked what kind.

“The kind that isn’t a soap company,” Sedlak said. “I’ve been at this eleven years. I’ve found six houses like this one. Six. Always a woman, always alone, always decades of it, always the receipts in a box because they keep the receipts, they all keep the receipts. That’s not consumer behavior. That’s observance.” He looked up at her from the floor. “Did she work for them?”

The nephew was upstairs. Dinah went and got him.

The nephew was forty-something and had inherited a house he had been inside maybe thirty times, at holidays, as a child and then not as a child. He said no. He said his aunt taught fourth grade for thirty-one years and then she was retired for twenty-five and that was the whole of it. He said it a little defensively, because a man in a good coat was sitting on his aunt’s basement floor asking whether she had belonged to something.

“That’s what they all say,” Sedlak said, pleasantly.

Dinah asked the nephew, later, when Sedlak was upstairs with the vessels, why his aunt had used the same soap for forty-six years.

The nephew thought about it in the way people think about a question they have never once been asked.

“I think she liked it,” he said.

Sedlak bought all of it. The crate, the cabinet, the linen closet, the vessels, at a price Dinah felt bad about and he did not. He photographed the shoebox and did not want the shoebox. Receipts were not what he was after. Receipts were paper. He wanted the objects, and he carried them out to a clean car in two trips, and he thanked her four times, and he gave her a card and asked her to call him if she ever saw another house like this one, and she said she would.

The house went empty by Sunday evening the way they all do.

Dinah stayed to clear the paper, which was the last thing and the worst thing and the part nobody ever wanted. She sat on the floor of the emptied basement with the shoebox and started sorting, and she had by then spent three days inside Ruth Ellery’s handwriting. It was on the grocery lists in the kitchen drawer. It was in the address book. It was on the backs of the photographs, in pencil, the names and the years. It was on the tax folders and the garden notes and a recipe card for a coffee cake. Dinah knew that hand the way you know a hand after three days, which is completely.

The delivery slips were signed on receipt. Every one of them. Forty-six years of them.

The signature was not Ruth Ellery’s handwriting.

Dinah went back through the box, from the bottom, from the beginning, and it was the same signature on every slip, the first one and the last one and all of them in between, and it did not change the way a hand changes across forty-six years, and it was not her hand, and it was not four different hands, and it was not the hand of a delivery driver signing off, because the driver’s line was blank on every slip and had always been blank.

It was one hand. It was the same hand. It was somebody’s.

Dinah put the box in the shred pile.

She took one slip out first, the oldest one, from the bottom, and folded it once and put it in her jacket, and she did not put it on the inventory, and she did not photograph it, and she did not call the number on Martin Sedlak’s card, then or later.

She finished the paper. She locked the house. She had another one Tuesday.

She opened it Sunday afternoon.

She had left the card face down on the notebook all morning. She had made a second cup of coffee. She had cleaned the counter. She had put a load of laundry in and then, standing at the machine listening to it fill, had realized she was avoiding a folded piece of paper on her kitchen table, which was ridiculous.

She sat back down. She picked up the card.

The paper was heavier than it should have been for its size. It bent stiffly when she opened it. It did not want to fold flat.

Inside, in the same oxblood ink, in the same handwriting, was an address on Route 53, a Friday date, and the time 6:00 PM. Above them, one line.

You are cordially invited.

That was all. No name of a host. No RSVP. No return card. No dress code. No mention of what the event was.

She read it three times. She was checking, mostly, to see if anything on it changed. Nothing did.

The address was a stretch of Route 53 she had driven a hundred times. She could not picture what was there. She could picture the stretch itself, the frontage road, the two-story office buildings set back behind trees, the storage yards behind chain link, but she could not put a building at that number.

She held the card up to the window. She had seen people do this in movies. She did not know what she was looking for. She was looking for a watermark, maybe, or a logo pressed into the paper. There was neither.

She refolded the card. She set it back on top of the notebook.

She thought about calling her sister and then did not. Her sister would want a beginning and an end and a reasonable question at the end of it, and Genny did not have any of those. What she had was a piece of stationery she could not account for and a workplace where you learned not to account for things.

She put the card in the inside zipper pocket of her bag, which she never used. She zipped it closed. She left the bag by the door.

Monday came in normally.

She had been half expecting it not to. Some part of her, going to bed Sunday night, had thought Monday might be different in some small way, that the card would announce itself before she was ready, that there would be a follow up on her doorstep or a voicemail from a number she did not know. There was neither. Her alarm went off. She made coffee. She drove to work. She parked in her usual spot.

She checked the inside zipper pocket in the elevator, quickly, without looking at what she was doing. The card was there. She let go of it.

She waited until Blake was refilling his water bottle.

The clay arrives on the train once every three months and no one working on the railroad docks was alive when it began. Every three months, like clockwork. It just arrives and nobody questions it.

The volume is the only part that has ever changed. More soap sold means more clay ordered, or received anyway, since nobody on the dock has ever seen the order itself. Every bar the company ships, every scent, all of it comes down to the same base, and the base comes down to whatever is in those barrels. The car got fuller over the years. That was the whole story of the arrangement, as far as anyone on the dock could tell it.

Walter Reese had the job for thirty-one years. His retirement landed at the end of a quarter, which meant that for the first time in those thirty-one years, somebody stood next to him on the dock waiting for the car. Priya Anand. Twenty-six. Hired three weeks earlier off a posting that read “receiving associate, materials, overnight” and stopped there. She’d asked in her second week what the materials were. The answer she got was that she’d be trained on the standing order. She asked what the standing order was. You’ll see, Walter said.

They were there before dawn. Walter hated being late, even though officially they could never be late. Since the shipment wasn’t on the schedule. The rail ran behind the old brick freight house, one of the original builds on the campus.

The barrels were unmarked. Pale grey-brown at the seams where the wrap fell short. Walter looked at them and said the color was right.

How do you know the color’s right, Priya asked.

Thirty-one years of the same color, he said. And one time it wasn’t. Half a shade off, years ago. He flagged it, and somebody from upstairs was standing on the dock inside of an hour, and the barrels went back on the car, and eleven days later a corrected shipment arrived. What the difference was, nobody told him. He didn’t ask. He was not sure, saying it out loud now, whether not asking had been a decision or just something that happened to him.

“You log it by hand,” he said. He had a clipboard. Paper form, one Priya had never seen in any of the building’s systems, because it isn’t in any of them. “Not the terminal. The terminal’s got no field for it. This sheet, then the sheet goes in the gray binder, binder goes in the bottom drawer. Once a quarter somebody comes down from upstairs, takes the sheet, brings the binder back. You don’t copy it. You don’t photograph it. You write it once.”

“There has to be a PO. A vendor.”

“There’s a freight code.” Six characters. Not shaped like any vendor code she’d learned in training. Those all start with a division prefix. This started with nothing she could place. “Doesn’t map to a vendor. I checked, my first year. Procurement told me the code was valid and to quit asking what it mapped to. A valid code is a valid code, is what they said. And look, they weren’t wrong. Thirty-one years it’s worked. Worked for the man who trained me. Same code the whole way back.”

The barrels came off the train in order. Sequenced by weight, heaviest last. The third one needs to be handled with care, the rest just set them down till you are done.

One manifest. A single sheet taped to the lead barrel. A quantity, in a unit she didn’t know. The code. That’s it. No weight listed, and the barrels obviously weighed something. No origin, no carrier, no DOT number, and every other manifest in the building has all three plus a printed name on the signature line. Here the signature line was blank. Almost blank. There was a word in it, faint the way a stamp gets when the same stamp hits the same line on the same form for longer than ink is supposed to last.

What’s that say, she asked.

He didn’t look over. Never could read it either, he said. Quit trying around year four. Same word on every sheet as far back as the binder goes, and the binder goes back further than the company’s been called what it’s called now. Log the code. Leave that line alone. Don’t clean it up.

The car left, no sound. No crew or engine. Priya set one of the barrels down and turned to ask something, and the car was just gone.

More barrels than there used to be. Walter mentioned it while he coiled the tape. A handful a quarter when he started. Two trips with the jack now. The shipment grew because the business grew, that part made ordinary sense. The part that didn’t: same kind of car. Same spur. Same one-page manifest with the same worn-out word on it, wanting nothing, declaring nothing, bigger in exactly one number.

“Last thing. Cure room, third floor, before end of shift. Not the materials cage, the cure room. Badge in, set them inside the painted line, badge out. Don’t stay in there.” He paused on it. “There’s a chair in the corner of that room. Been there longer than me. You don’t sit in it. I don’t know who it’s for. It isn’t for us.”

She wrote the code in the binder and put the binder in the drawer. And she’d thought about it, out there with the spur empty, taking a picture of that faded word. Not to do anything with it. To read it later in decent light, that’s all.

She didn’t do it. If you asked her why, she couldn’t tell you, other than Walter said don’t, and someone told Walter, and someone told that man, and the line of people who never took the picture runs back past the binder, past the company’s current name, all the way to a clerk who ferried the firm’s own deliveries out to the supplier and back for forty-three years. What he left behind at the end of all that was one sealed letter, addressed to whoever came after him. That was the whole record. One letter.

Walter retired on schedule. Nice card. Cake from the good bakery. Last day, he shook her hand and told her she was good at the job, which was true, and that the next shipment would come whether she was ready for it or not, and that someday she’d stand where he was standing, training somebody, and discover she couldn’t explain any of it better than he just had.

She receives the order now, every ninety days, logged by hand. She has her guesses about the rest.

The soap is genuinely very good, she’ll tell you that much. She uses it at home. Everyone she’s ever handed a bar to has come back wanting to know where to buy it.

The box had been Karen’s problem since Tuesday, which meant Genny had stopped thinking about it by Wednesday morning, the way you stop thinking about anything that has been moved to someone else’s cube.

She came in at 7:58. She put her coat on the back of her chair. She set her coffee on the left side of the desk, away from the docking station. She opened her notebook to the page she had left off on, which was Tuesday’s running list of catalog entries pending review.

The notebook smelled like flowers.

She had not noticed it at first. She had opened the notebook the way she always did, without looking at it, and had started reading her own notes before her brain caught up to what her nose had already registered. She paused. She closed the notebook. She opened it again.

There it was. Not strong. Not unpleasant. Faintly sweet. Faintly floral. The kind of smell you got from a hand cream sample, except it was not on her hands, it was on the paper.

She lifted the notebook to her face and inhaled, which she immediately regretted because Blake had just stood up from his cube two over and could see her doing it. She lowered the notebook. Blake did not look. Blake was looking at Karen, who was at the far end of the floor correcting someone.

Genny set the notebook down on her desk.

She thought about the box. The box had been on her desk for about forty minutes Tuesday morning before Karen had pushed it to her own cube with her foot. It had smelled like this. She had noticed it at the time. The notebook had been on the desk next to the box.

That was the chain of events. The notebook had picked up the smell from the box. That was a thing that happened, with strong scents. Her grandmother’s house had smelled like cedar for forty years because of one closet.

She got up. She went to the bathroom. She washed her hands, even though her hands were not the issue. She did this because it felt like the kind of thing that should help.

She came back. She opened the notebook. It still smelled like flowers.

By Thursday she had decided to ignore it.

The meeting was scheduled for ninety minutes and had three items on the agenda. Only the first was ever reached.

The room was on the fourth floor of the personal care division, the long one with the frosted glass wall facing the corridor. The directors arrived first, the way the prepared arrive first. Daniel Vance and Renata Carrow sat on the window side with their laptops open and their printouts squared. Samuel Okafor and Greg Brandt sat across with nothing in front of them, there to listen and vote with whoever made the better case. The two senior managers, Wendy Liu and Anthony Demarco, took the chairs along the wall, which is where senior managers sit when the voting members are vice presidents. The cost analyst, a man named Eli Petrie who had been with the company under two years, set up by the screen and tested the clicker twice.

The recording secretary sat in the corner by the door. Her name on the distribution list was Grace Acer. She was on loan from another floor for the quarter and had been told it would be three meetings. This was the first. She wrote the date at the top of a legal pad and waited.

The three voting members came in together and came in last. Ray Pell from Operations, heavy and unhurried. David Asher from Supply, who held the door for Liu on his way in. Marian Iqbal from Finance, who sat and folded her hands on the empty table in front of her. None of them brought materials. Asher asked Petrie if he was ready. Petrie said he was.

There were three items. Base material substitution for the Halloran personal care line. Packaging consolidation for the refillable vessel. Freight renegotiation for the first quarter. Acer wrote all three at the top of the page. She would draw a line through the bottom two before the morning was over, unstarted.

Petrie presented the first. He did not oversell. He built the case one fact on top of the next.

“The Halloran base has used one clay, from one supplier, since 1904,” he said. “It is sole-source. The contract has never been competitively bid. Not once. There is no bid event on file, ever, for this input.” He advanced the slide. “Here is what we pay. Here is what comparable cosmetic clays cost on the open market. We are paying between nine and fourteen times the going rate.”

He let the two numbers sit side by side before he moved on.

“I did the work before coming in here,” he said. “Three candidate substitutes. All cosmetic or food grade, fully documented, all from vendors already on our approved list. No onboarding, no new audit, no lead time. We could order this quarter.”

A table came up, four columns.

“I commissioned independent lab testing first. The current base in column one, the three candidates beside it. pH. Lather. Hardness. Cure time. Skin irritation index. Shelf life.” He looked at the room. “They match to three decimal places on every property the lab can measure. We tested blind. The lab could not identify the incumbent. There is no instrument we have access to that tells the current base apart from any of these three.”

Vance leaned forward. “Say the savings number.”

Petrie put it on the screen. Acer wrote it down and will not reproduce it here, because she was later asked not to, but it was larger on its own than the entire cost reduction target the division had been handed for the quarter.

“That is annual,” Petrie said. “Recurring. After a small year-one validation cost, which I have already netted out, it is clean savings, indefinitely, with no measurable change to the product.”

He thanked the board and sat.

Vance spoke first, because Vance was always going to speak first.

“In eleven years on review boards I have not seen a cleaner case,” he said. “Sole-source at fourteen times market. No competitive bid in the history of the company. Three replacements the lab cannot tell apart from the original. A savings number that closes our target and then some. I move we approve the substitution. If anyone has reservations about a straight switch, I will amend the motion to this: approve a competitive bid on the input. Just put it to market. We are not even obligated to act on the bids. I cannot construct an argument against asking.”

He looked down the table.

Asher said, “No to both.”

He said it without weight, the way a man declines a second helping. He was not cold. He had held the door on the way in.

“On what grounds,” Vance said.

“The base formulation is not eligible for substitution,” Asher said. “It is not a change this board can approve. That is not a reflection on the work. The work is excellent, and Eli should hear that plainly. But the base was never on the table. I should have caught it on the agenda and pulled the item.”

Carrow spoke. “There is no documented exception for the base. Daniel looked. I looked. I read the change control policy front to back last night. No carve-out, no exclusion. By our own governing policy it is in scope, and a clean cost case in scope gets a vote.”

“You read it correctly,” Asher said. “There is no exception in the policy.”

“Then it is in scope.”

“It is not eligible,” Asher said again, and added nothing after it, and the absence of anything after it was the loudest thing that had happened in the room.

Carrow tried another door. “Is there a quality concern the lab missed. A field complaint history. Anything.”

Pell answered from the far end. “No. The lab is right. A customer could not tell the bars apart either. There is no quality argument, and I want that on the record so nobody leaves thinking we hid behind one.”

“Then it is contractual,” Carrow said.

“Yes,” Asher said.

“We have broken worse contracts than a soap input and paid the exit fee and come out ahead. Show us the agreement. Let procurement and legal look at the exit terms.”

“I cannot show you the agreement,” Asher said. “It is not held at the division. It is not held at the corporate level either, not where you would look for it. It is an executive-level instrument. A heritage contract. It predates every person in this room and most of the org chart above us, and it is administered somewhere I have never been given visibility into.”

“Who has visibility,” Carrow said. “Who can authorize a review.”

Asher was quiet for a moment. The fluorescent panel over the table had a flutter in one tube that no one had fixed.

“I do not know,” he said. “I asked that question once, when I first sat in this chair and the same item crossed my desk and I made the case Daniel just made, almost word for word. I did not get an answer I could use. I asked once. I did not ask again.” He said it the way a person describes the weather in a country he used to live in. “I would advise you not to spend much of your career on it.”

Acer wrote that down too.

The room went quiet for a period she did not time. Petrie looked at his own screen, where the table still sat, identical to three decimal places. He had the expression of a young person discovering that being right was not the currency he had understood it to be.

Vance made one more attempt, and it was the correct one.

“Let me ask it as cleanly as I can,” he said. “Does anyone at this table dispute a single number Eli put on that screen.”

No one did.

“Then I want the record to show what we are doing. We are choosing, with full knowledge and unanimous agreement, to leave that figure on the floor. This year. Every year. For a reason not one of the three people in this room with a vote will say out loud.”

Iqbal said, “Yes.”

It was the first thing she had said. She was Finance. Of the three, the number on the screen should have cost her the most sleep, and she confirmed leaving it on the floor as evenly as if she were confirming the date of the next session.

“I have voted that way every year I have sat on this board,” she said. “Six years. When it becomes your turn to sit in one of these chairs, and it will, because they move good directors up and you are a good director, vote the way I am voting today. Do it without spending the years on it that some of us spent.”

“Why,” Vance said.

Iqbal looked at him. Acer watched her decide not to answer.

“That question has been asked,” Iqbal said. “It is in the minutes from before my time. Go and read it. You will find the asking. You will not find the answer. There has never been an answer entered into a record. I have come to understand that the absence is the answer, and that I am better at my job for having stopped looking for a different one.”

The board declined the substitution. The board declined the competitive bid. No grounds were entered. The three voting members were unanimous, and they were unanimous quickly, and not one of them looked uncomfortable, which was the part Acer kept returning to afterward. They were not concealing something they were ashamed of. They were observing something they had stopped fighting.

Asher thanked Petrie a third time, told him the analysis was the best the board had seen in years, that he should be proud of it, and that none of it would go anywhere. He said the three things in one breath and they did not appear to contradict one another in his mind.

Petrie began to pack his bag. Liu leaned over from the wall and said something to him too quietly for Acer to hear. Petrie nodded. He opened his laptop again and, while still in the room, deleted the file with the three substitutes from the shared drive. A moment later Acer was asked to confirm the file had been removed. She confirmed it, and wrote in the minutes that it had been removed and that she had verified the removal, because leaving it out would have been adding nothing in, and adding nothing in was the whole of her reputation.

Items two and three were carried to the next session.

The meeting had been scheduled for ninety minutes. It ran the full block and forty minutes past it, all on the first item. At the end of it the company would go on buying the same clay from the same supplier at fourteen times the market rate, the way it had since 1904, for a reason four intelligent directors had now watched three intelligent vice presidents agree, without visible difficulty, not to know.

Acer typed the minutes that afternoon. They were four paragraphs. They left nothing out and added nothing in. She still uses the soap. It is very good soap. That had never been in question. It was, if anything, the only thing in the room every person present had agreed on.

There is a box in this story. It was addressed to someone else. It arrived anyway.

Beginning this Friday, May Season Studio is opening a new run of internal files: Onboarding, a thirteen-part case history from Product Classification. It follows an employee named Genny, four years into her tenure, on the day a shipment reaches her cube that should have gone to someone else’s. She does not touch it. That does not matter. It touches her anyway.

What follows is not a promotion in the way the company will eventually describe it as one.

Onboarding runs weekly, Fridays, as a paid release. This is separate from the Tuesday archive, which continues as it always has, free, on schedule, no changes. Tuesday is where the studio’s open files live. Friday is where the ones with restricted distribution live. Nothing about that arrangement is changing except that now there is something new filed under it.

The Halloran product line also continues on Tuesdays, for anyone keeping track. Some things at this company move quietly. Some things just keep going.

We do not think Onboarding needs much more introduction than that. The paper explains itself. It usually does.

New subscribers should start wherever they’d like. Existing readers already know the studio does not warn you before something follows you home.

Monika picked the Starbucks inside HQ, the one tucked into the corner of the lobby with the comfortable chairs and the long counter for laptops and the big screen on the wall playing MSS promo videos on a loop with the sound off. It was where people went to grab coffee or a quick snack, or to have a conversation they wanted to look casual.

She was already there when Genny arrived. She had a table near the window and had taken the seat facing the room, which meant she could see everyone who walked past, which Genny did not think about until later.

“Genny.” Monika stood and hugged her before Genny had fully set her bag down. The hug was warm. It lasted the correct amount of time. “It’s so good to see you. It’s been what, two years?”

“Something like that.”

“You look great. You really do.”

Genny sat. Monika already had a drink in front of her. She had not gotten Genny anything, which was fine, that was not how this worked, but Genny noticed it the way you notice things you do not say out loud.

They had worked in the same group once. Before Genny moved to Karen’s team and before Monika got the promotion and then the assignment overseas, the pilot office, the one that got written up in the internal newsletter with a photo of Monika cutting a ribbon. They used to get lunch. They used to text. At one point Genny would have called her a friend, or close to it, the way you are close to someone when you sit forty feet apart for three years.

“So how is it over there,” Genny asked. “How’s the assignment.”

“Good. Really good. I mean it’s a lot. It’s a small office so you wear every hat, which sounds exhausting and it is, but you learn so much.” Monika said this smoothly, the way you say a thing you have said many times. “I’m ready to come back, though. Nine months and I’m back.”

“That’s exciting.”

“It is. It is.” Monika took a sip of her drink. “So tell me about you. You’re still in Product Catalog?”

“Product Classification. Under Karen.”

“Karen.” Monika said the name like she was placing it. “Right. How is that.”

“It’s fine. It’s the job.”

“And the org over here, what’s it look like now? I’ve been gone, I’m so out of the loop. Who’s running the floor these days. Is Dennis still around?”

“Dennis retired.”

“Did he. Wow.” Monika nodded slowly, but her eyes had moved, just slightly, to the door. Someone had walked in. Monika watched them long enough to confirm she did not know them, then came back. “And the reorg, the one in the spring. How did that shake out. Who picked up the old products group.”

Genny told her. She knew the answer because everyone knew the answer, it had been in three all-hands meetings, but she told her like it was useful, because the way Monika was leaning forward made it clear that being useful was the point.

That was when Genny understood what the coffee was.

It was not unkind. Monika was not pretending. She did want to know how Genny was, in the way you want to know how a coworker is, which is to say briefly and on the way to something else. The something else was the org chart. Monika’s old role had been eliminated in the spring reorg. She had a job for nine more months and then she had nothing, and she was at headquarters for the week, and the week was for figuring out where she landed when she came back.

Genny was the first stop. Genny knew the floor, knew who reported to who, knew which groups were growing and which ones were quietly being absorbed. Genny was, for the purposes of this coffee, a map.

“It’s funny,” Monika said. “You always knew everything. You always had the lay of the land.”

“I sit in a lot of meetings.”

“No, it’s a skill.” Monika smiled. “It really is.”

They talked for forty minutes. It was a good forty minutes. Monika was easy to talk to, she always had been, that was the thing about her. She laughed at the right parts and remembered the name of Genny’s old manager and asked a follow-up question about Genny’s commute that was specific enough to seem genuine. She mentioned, in passing, that her apartment overseas had a leak the whole first winter, and that her husband had finally learned the language better than she had, and that she missed Mexican food more than she expected to. She offered these the way you offer small things, just enough to make the conversation feel personal, just enough that it did not feel like an interview. By the end Genny had told her everything she knew about the current shape of the organization and Monika had told her almost nothing about herself that was not also a question about someone else.

“We should do this again before I fly back,” Monika said, standing, gathering her phone and her badge. “Really. Let’s not let it be another two years.”

“For sure.”

Another hug. Correct length. Warm.

Monika walked toward the elevators and stopped twice on the way, once for a man in a quarter-zip who lit up when he saw her, once for a woman who hugged her the way Monika had hugged Genny. Genny watched from the table while she finished her coffee. On the screen above them, a promo video showed a sunlit warehouse and a slogan about keeping the world in order.

She saw Monika again on Tuesday, by the printers on three, deep in conversation with someone from Finance. She saw her Wednesday in the main lobby, hugging two people at once, one arm each, laughing at something. She saw her Thursday outside the executive suite, walking with a director Genny only recognized from the wall of photos, the two of them talking with their heads tilted toward each other like they were sharing a secret.

Different departments. Different levels. Monika moved through all of them the same way, warm and easy and fully present for exactly as long as it took.

It was a skill. Genny had said so herself.

Genny did not feel used. She had thought she might, walking back to her desk on Friday after spotting Monika one last time near the cafeteria, and she checked for the feeling the way you check a tooth with your tongue. It was not there. What had happened was simple and she could name it. Monika needed something, and Genny had it, and Monika had asked for it the nicest way there was to ask, which was over coffee, with a hug, calling it a catch-up.

That was the game. Monika was good at it. She was a level up and climbing and this was how you climbed, you made every conversation feel like the only one that mattered while you were in it, and then you went to the next one.

Genny played it too, just not like that. She played it enough. Enough to be useful when being useful was cheap, enough to keep a good name on the floor, enough that when she finally wanted a different job someone would remember her as the one who knew everything and was easy to work with. She had been useful to Monika today on purpose. There was a version of this where it came back around. Monika would be two levels up in a year, and Genny would not have wasted the coffee.

The difference was that Genny knew when she was doing it. Monika did it all the time, to everyone, which meant she was probably better at her job, and probably more tired than she let on.

Genny sat back down at her desk. Karen was at the far end of the floor correcting someone. The fluorescent lights hummed. Genny moved her coffee to the left side, away from the docking station, and opened the catalog.

It had been good to see Monika. That part was true. Both things were true at once, which was most things, in Genny’s experience.

She put her headphones on.

The complaint was filed on a Tuesday.

Hayley Petrosian had been at MSS for three weeks. She was twenty-two. She had graduated in May from a small liberal arts college in Ohio. Her job title was Marketing Coordinator. Her manager was Chad Reynolds. She had been told during her interview that the team was “a great group” and that Chad was “really invested in developing junior talent.”

Hayley did not yet know which corporate phrases meant something and which were structural. She had not yet developed the calibration the women two cubes over had spent four years building. She had no working theory of Chad.

What she had was three weeks of observation.

The staring had started in her second week.

She had assumed, at first, that this was an executive thing. A way of conveying investment in your reports. She had read about this in a book her father had given her at graduation.

She watched Chad in subsequent meetings. She noticed that he did not hold eye contact this way with the male coordinator who had been hired the same week. She noticed he did not hold eye contact this way with the women on the floor over the age of forty.

She noticed that he held it with her. And with a coordinator named Ren. And with a contract designer who had started two days after she did and who was twenty-four and from California.

Hayley made a note in her phone.

By the end of week three, Hayley had eleven notes.

She filed the ticket on a Tuesday afternoon after a one-on-one in which Chad complimented her blazer twice. The first time when she walked in. The second time when she stood up to leave. The compliment was about the blazer. The way he looked at it the second time was not.

She used the word *creepy* once in the ticket and then deleted it and replaced it with *uncomfortable*. She used the phrase *sustained visual attention* because she had read it on the HR intranet that morning while searching for the proper form.

She submitted the ticket. She closed her laptop. She walked to the bathroom and did not cry but did sit on the closed toilet lid for four minutes before going back to her desk.

HR was Diane Loomis.

Diane had been with MSS for eleven years. She had seen Chad’s name on incident logs three times before, each time in connection with a complaint that had been described to her, off the record, as low-grade, or ambient, or, on one occasion, the kind of thing you can’t really do anything about.

Diane read the ticket twice.

She noted, in her private file, that this was the first time the complaint had been filed with documentation. Eleven dated entries, attached as a screenshot, were the kind of contemporaneous record that HR could not dismiss as memory.

She scheduled two meetings.

The meeting with Hayley was careful. Diane asked clarifying questions in the voice HR uses when it has decided in advance not to discourage a complainant. Hayley walked her through the notes. Diane wrote things down.

She asked whether Mr. Reynolds had said anything inappropriate.

Hayley said no.

She asked whether he had touched her.

Hayley said no.

She asked whether he had made any direct comments about appearance.

Hayley said he had told her, on Monday, that she had a really expressive face. He had said it while she was eating a granola bar.

Diane wrote that down.

The meeting ended. Diane thanked her. Hayley returned to her cube and worked through her queue and did not look at Chad’s section of the floor for the remainder of the day.

The meeting with Chad was less careful.

Chad arrived eight minutes early with a coffee. He sat down and asked Diane what was up. He did so in the tone of a man who had not been told what the meeting was about and who assumed that whatever it was, it would be fine.

Diane explained that a member of his team had raised a concern regarding sustained visual engagement.

Chad blinked. He asked her to repeat that.

Diane repeated it.

Chad laughed. Not maliciously. Genuinely. The kind of short, baffled laugh a person produces when they have just been told something they cannot fit into their model of themselves.

He asked if someone had reported him for *looking* at them.

Diane said the concern was the duration.

Chad said he was a people person and that looking at people was his job.

Diane said the concern was that the looking extended past the point of conversational utility, that it was directed primarily at women on the team under the age of thirty, and that it occurred alongside comments about appearance that, while individually unremarkable, accumulated into a pattern.

Chad stared at her.

Diane timed it privately.

Nine seconds.

She added a note.

Chad asked who had reported him.

Diane said she was not able to share that.

Chad said it was Hayley.

Diane said she was not able to share that.

Chad said Hayley had been kind of a project. That he had been trying to develop her.

Diane wrote that down too.

The conversation lasted forty-six minutes. By the end of it, Chad understood, in the specific and limited way Chad understood things, that he had been Talked To. He understood the Talk had not resulted in formal discipline. He understood there was no note going in his file beyond what Diane termed an informal coaching record. He understood he was expected to modify his behavior.

He did not understand what behavior he was modifying.

He asked Diane, at the end, whether she could give him a clearer example.

Diane said to reduce the duration of direct eye contact in one-on-one settings, particularly with newer employees.

Chad said, “So just... don’t look at them?”

Diane said, “Look at them appropriately.”

Chad said, “What’s appropriately?”

Diane said, “Less.”

Chad left the meeting and went directly to his cube and sat down and stared at his monitor for approximately twenty minutes without doing anything, which was the longest period of sustained visual engagement he had performed in the office in eight years.

The week that followed was difficult for everyone.

Chad did not look at Hayley. Chad did not look at Ren. Chad did not look at the new contract designer. Chad looked, instead, slightly to the left of each of them, at a fixed point on the wall, with the focused intensity of a man trying very hard not to do something he did not understand he had been doing.

On Thursday, Chad approached Hayley at her desk. He told her, in what he believed was a professional and corrective tone, that he took this very seriously and was working on it. He told her he valued her as a team member. He told her he wanted her to feel safe.

Hayley said thank you three times without looking up.

She filed a second ticket within the hour.

Two weeks later, the policy appeared on the intranet.

**HR Advisory: Sustained Visual Engagement in Professional Settings.**

Four pages. Carefully worded. Exhaustive.

It defined visual engagement.

It defined sustained.

It distinguished between conversational eye contact, attentive listening behavior, and what the policy termed non-verbal pattern conduct. It included a section on appropriate compliments. It included a section on inappropriate compliments. It noted that a compliment about an article of clothing should not be repeated within the same conversation, and that compliments regarding facial expression, posture, or demeanor were generally discouraged in cross-tier interactions.

It defined cross-tier.

It included a footnote on avoidance behavior that was almost certainly written about Chad.

No one was named.

Hayley read it at her desk and forwarded it to her mother with the subject line *they wrote a whole document about him*.

Chad read it at his desk. He read it twice. He did not understand the footnote. He sent Diane a Slack message asking whether the policy was about him.

Diane did not respond.

Chad kept his job.

He hit his Q3 numbers.

In November, he was given a small commendation at the all-hands for leading with consistency through a period of internal recalibration. He thanked the senior VP. He said it had been a great learning experience.

In February, he was promoted to Senior Director. The announcement described him as a values-driven leader who had demonstrated exceptional growth. It included a quote from Chad in which he said his recent journey had taught him the importance of psychological safety on his team.

Hayley read the email at her desk. She did not forward it to her mother.

In March, Chad launched a mentorship program for newly hired women on his team. The first cohort had four participants. All four were under twenty-five.

In April, he told the story at an offsite as a personal growth moment. He said he was grateful to the person who had raised the concern, though he could not name her, he added with a small laugh, due to confidentiality.

Several people clapped.

Hayley had taken the day off.

The floor returned to normal.

Which was to say, uncomfortable in quieter ways.

I.

The contract was signed on the eleventh of November, 1903, at the administrative site referenced in the federal field report filed the month prior. Cornelius Halloran went himself. He brought his attorney. He brought a junior clerk named Aldous Wren who had been with the firm for eleven months and who had been told, the morning before they left, that he would be handling the deliveries once the contract was in force. The senior staff had made that decision before the trip. Wren had not been consulted.

The signing was conducted in a small room with three chairs and one table. There were two copies of the contract laid out. The first was in English. The second was in a script the Halloran party did not recognize and was not invited to study. The representative of the Compact indicated that the two documents were identical in substance and that any discrepancy of interpretation would be resolved in favor of the second.

Halloran’s attorney asked whether the second could be translated.

The representative said no. The representative further indicated that the offer was extended on the understanding that Mr. Halloran was capable of accepting terms he could not verify, and that the offer would not be extended a second time.

The attorney leaned in and advised, in a quiet voice, against signing.

Mr. Halloran signed.

He signed slowly. He read each page before he initialed it, though he had no way of knowing whether the page he read corresponded to the page being executed. On the third page he was asked to record, in his own hand, the names of three Halloran employees authorized to make deliveries to the site. He wrote his own name. He wrote the attorney’s name. He wrote Wren’s name without looking at the clerk.

The contract was placed in a leather portfolio and given to the attorney. The Halloran party was conducted off the site by the same route by which they had arrived, which did not appear to follow any consistent compass heading.

On the return train to Chicago, Halloran did not speak. The attorney slept. Wren sat by the window and watched the country pass.

The assembly took six weeks. A warehouse on the south side of Chicago was leased for the purpose alone. Two senior staff handled procurement and were instructed not to discuss the nature of the client with the suppliers. The suppliers did not ask. The volumes were large enough to interest them and the payment was prompt enough to settle the matter.

The smallpox vaccine came from Pennsylvania. The diphtheria antitoxin came from New York. The carbolic acid arrived in industrial drums from a chemical works in Pittsburgh. The iodine, the boric acid, the silver nitrate moved through the firm’s existing surgical channels. The linens came from a cotton mill in southern Indiana. The beeswax came from an apiary in Wisconsin. The glass vessels were commissioned from a Toledo glassworks and delivered late. The salt came from the Saginaw Bay brine operations under a private arrangement that did not appear on the firm’s standard ledgers.

The soap was the harder matter. The formulation required a clay component that was not commercially available, and the Compact had agreed to supply it in raw form. Twenty barrels of pale grey-brown clay arrived by rail in late December, addressed to the firm under a freight code that did not match any of Halloran’s standing categories. The barrels were unmarked. The senior soapmaker engaged for the project remarked that he had never encountered the material and would not be in a position to identify it if asked. He was asked not to ask. He understood the instruction.

II.

The first delivery left Chicago on the sixth of January, 1904. Wren accompanied it. He was the only Halloran employee on the train.

He had been given a sealed letter of authorization, a manifest, a counter-signed bill of lading, and the leather portfolio containing the firm’s copy of the executed contract. He had been told to present the manifest at the site, obtain a receipt, and come home. He had not been told what to expect. He understood, from the absence of any instruction beyond the procedural, that the firm preferred not to know what he would see.

He arrived at the designated station on the eighth. The station was small. The platform was empty except for a single individual who did not give a name and who was not the same person who had met Halloran in November. Wren noted the change and made no remark.

The freight was unloaded onto two wagons drawn by horses. The horses did not behave in a manner Wren recognized from any prior experience with rural transport. They moved without direction. The driver did not hold the reins. He held a small leather book and made occasional notes in it. Wren rode in the lead wagon and was not addressed during the two-hour journey.

At the site, the goods were unloaded by a party of perhaps fifteen individuals who worked without speaking. Wren presented his manifest. A receipt was countersigned in his presence by a representative who Wren understood, from the portion of the federal report he had been permitted to read, was the same individual who had met the federal officer in September.

The inspection was thorough. The representative read the lot numbers on the diphtheria antitoxin shipments aloud and compared them against a list carried in a separate folder. The lot numbers matched. The representative recorded the match in writing and said nothing.

The soap was inspected last. The representative opened one bar, broke it in half, and held the broken edge to the light. He held the bar to his face and breathed it in. He passed the bar to a second individual who had been standing at a slight distance. The second individual repeated the gesture. The two of them looked at each other for a moment in a way Wren could not interpret, and then the representative turned back to him.

“The formulation is correct,” the representative said. “Convey to Mr. Halloran that the firm has executed in good faith. The Compact will execute in kind. Tell him the formulation must not be altered. Not in any respect. The bar must be made the way it has been made today, for as long as the contract is in force.”

Wren wrote it down.

The representative watched him write.

“You will return in ninety days,” the representative said. “The firm has authorized three individuals. Mr. Halloran will not come back. The attorney will not come back. You will. Until you cannot.”

Wren did not look up. He finished the line he was writing. He closed the notebook and put it in his coat. The representative did not appear to expect anything from him after that and Wren did not offer anything.

III.

The receipt went into the portfolio. Wren was driven back to the station by the same wagon and the same driver. The horses returned without direction.

He arrived at the Halloran offices on the eleventh of January. He presented the receipt to Halloran personally. He conveyed the message about the formulation. Halloran read the receipt twice and put it in his desk and did not speak for what Wren estimated was a full minute.

Then Halloran asked whether the clerk wished to remain with the firm.

Wren said that he did.

Halloran nodded once. He said the clerk’s salary would be adjusted, effective that day, to reflect the additional responsibilities. He said the adjustment would not appear on the firm’s standard payroll documentation and would not be referenced in writing. He said the clerk was not, under any circumstance, to discuss the nature of the account with any party not specifically authorized.

Wren said he understood.

Halloran did not thank him.

Wren returned to his desk. He worked through the correspondence that had accumulated in his absence. He left the office at the usual hour and took the usual streetcar and arrived at his home shortly after seven. His wife asked how the journey had been. He told her it had been uneventful. He ate his dinner.

He did not speak of the matter again that evening, or in any evening that followed, until the day he retired from the firm in 1947, at which point he spoke of it only once. He wrote a sealed letter to the man taking his place. The letter was marked for delivery only after the successor had accepted the same role Wren had accepted in the corner of a small room in November of 1903, without being asked.

contracts in supernatural fiction usually carry drama. soul-selling, blood pacts, mirrors that talk back. i wanted the opposite. the most binding contract is the one signed quietly in a room you cannot read the second copy of, then carried home and never spoken of, then handed to someone who also was not asked.

PRELIMINARY NOTE

The undersigned was dispatched on the 22nd of September, 1903, to confirm the existence and condition of a population referenced in a written request submitted to Halloran Merchant Co. of Chicago. The request was unsigned. It arrived by post in an envelope of uncommon paper. It asked for the resumption of a supply arrangement understood to have lapsed.

The Merchant Co. forwarded the request to the Department because the volume requested exceeded their independent capacity and because the goods named in the request were not goods Halloran ordinarily carried.

The undersigned was instructed to confirm the population, assess its character, and determine whether federal interest required involvement. The undersigned was further instructed to make no commitments on behalf of the Department.

The undersigned traveled by rail to a station designated in the request, was met at the platform by a person who did not give a name, and was conducted on foot for approximately two hours to the site of the population.

The location is not recorded in this report. The undersigned was asked not to record it. The undersigned has chosen to comply.

OBSERVATION ONE. STRUCTURE OF THE POPULATION

The site visited by the undersigned is not the population. The site is, by the population’s own description, an administrative seat. A coordinating ground. A fixed location at which contracts are executed and at which goods may be received and redistributed. The structures the undersigned was shown were offices, archives, and a quiet hall used for what the representative termed “internal sessions.” There were no homes.

The population proper is dispersed. The representative did not provide a number and asked that the undersigned not attempt one. When pressed, the representative offered the following.

“We live where you live. We work where you work. We are in your cities. We are in your factories. We are in your railroad offices and your hospitals and your churches. We sign leases. We pay rents. We attend the same funerals you attend. You have not noticed us because we have spent a long time learning not to be noticed.”

The undersigned recorded this statement and offers no opinion on its accuracy. The undersigned will note that during the visit to the site, the undersigned counted approximately forty individuals present, all of whom appeared to be functioning in some administrative or custodial capacity. The undersigned was informed that the larger membership did not gather at the site under any ordinary circumstance.

The site occupies a defined area in a wooded region of approximately one square mile. The boundaries are not marked on any commercial or federal map known to the undersigned. The structures are not visible from the perimeter and the undersigned was conducted to them along a route that did not appear to follow any consistent compass heading.

OBSERVATION TWO. PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

The forty individuals observed at the site are, by ordinary measure, human in appearance. They speak English. They wear clothing recognizable as belonging to the present century, though several items appeared older and were of unfamiliar tailoring.

The undersigned will note that, by the population’s own account, the broader membership does not visit the site and is not subject to the undersigned’s observation. The representative indicated that members of the population are not, in the ordinary course of their lives, distinguishable from the surrounding citizenry. The undersigned cannot verify this. The undersigned can only note that the representative made the claim in a tone that did not invite disagreement.

Of the individuals present at the site, the undersigned observed the following.

Their general bearing is uniform. They move with an economy of motion the undersigned has previously associated with experienced clerks and trained nurses. They do not raise their voices. They do not gesture. They do not appear to require eye contact when speaking.

The undersigned was unable to identify any children during the visit. When asked, the undersigned was informed that the site was not a residence and that children were therefore not present. The representative added that this was a fact and not a concealment. The undersigned did not press the matter.

OBSERVATION THREE. ORIGIN AND NAME

The undersigned asked, in plain terms, what the population called itself and how long it had been present in this country.

The reply was given by a person who identified themselves only as a representative.

“We are old. We do not provide a date. We do not provide a place of origin. We have been here longer than your records and we will be here when your records are no longer maintained. This is not a boast. It is a fact we have learned to keep to ourselves.”

The undersigned then asked what name the population wished to be entered under, for the purposes of the contract.

The representative answered without hesitation.

“The Redfield Compact. The first word is a town. The second word is the arrangement we are offering. Use both. The name should not stand out. We have selected it so that it does not.”

The undersigned recorded the name as given. The undersigned will note, for the file, that no town of Redfield is referenced in the supporting materials provided by Halloran Merchant Co., and that the undersigned was unable to identify, on the maps available to him in the field, a town of Redfield within plausible distance of the site. The representative did not clarify and the undersigned did not press.

The representative declined further questions on the matter of origin. The undersigned did not press.

OBSERVATION FOUR. HEALTH

This section is the substance of the report.

The population is not immune to the diseases of the modern world. They are, by their own account, more vulnerable than the surrounding population, not less.

The representative was direct on this point.

“We have outlived plagues you have not yet named. We have not outlived the ones that will come. The diseases of your century travel faster than the ones we learned to manage. The cities you are building bring with them organisms our internal arrangements have not adapted to. We live among you. We catch what you catch. We do not always recover from what you recover from.”

The undersigned was shown a ledger. The ledger recorded losses by year. The undersigned was not permitted to copy the ledger but was permitted to review it. The figures recorded for the preceding decade were, in the undersigned’s recollection, as follows.

Tuberculosis. Recurrent and widespread, across the membership in the urban centers, with concentrations in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and Saint Louis.

Typhoid. Two outbreaks of note, the second of which resulted in a recorded loss the representative described as “more than acceptable.”

Smallpox. Sporadic. Localized to individuals who had failed to obtain vaccination prior to exposure.

Diphtheria. Persistent. Particularly damaging in the western membership.

Pneumonia. Seasonal. Considered by the representative to be a baseline cost.

The representative declined to provide an aggregate figure. The representative did indicate that the rate of loss had increased in each of the preceding five years and that the population had no expectation of this trend reversing without intervention.

The undersigned will note that the diseases named are diseases of the modern American city. The population is being killed, at scale, by the same illnesses that kill the surrounding citizenry. The difference, by the representative’s account, is one of degree. They lose more, faster, with less warning.

This is the basis of their request.

OBSERVATION FIVE. PRIOR ARRANGEMENT

The representative referenced, without elaboration, a prior arrangement with what the representative termed “the federal apparatus.” The undersigned was unable to determine the date or nature of this prior arrangement. The representative declined to specify.

The undersigned will note only the following statement, recorded verbatim:

“We approached your government once. We will not do so again. We were not assisted. We were studied. The studies were not returned to us. The individuals who participated in the studies were not returned to us. We will not be approaching your government for the resumption of supply. We are approaching a merchant. That is a different relationship. A merchant honors a contract because a contract is the only basis on which a merchant continues to be a merchant. A government honors a contract until the contract becomes inconvenient.”

The undersigned recorded this statement without comment. The undersigned now records it again, without comment.

OBSERVATION SIX. THE REQUEST

The population has requested, through Halloran Merchant Co., the regular delivery of the following categories of goods. The undersigned reproduces the list in full, as it was provided.

1. Smallpox vaccine, of current preparation, in quantity sufficient for the full population on an annual cycle.

2. Diphtheria antitoxin, of recent preparation, in quantity adequate for emergency response within the population. The representative noted, without prompting, an awareness of the antitoxin contamination incident of 1901 and indicated that the population would require proof of source and lot number for each shipment. The undersigned records this requirement as reasonable.

3. Carbolic acid, in industrial quantity, for the maintenance of internal sanitation.

4. Iodine. Boric acid. Silver nitrate. Standard antiseptic preparations of the kind sold for surgical use.

5. Soap of a specified formulation. The formulation was provided in writing and is unusual. It contains no animal tallow. It contains a clay component the undersigned does not recognize. The population indicated that the soap formulation was their own and that they were prepared to share it with the Merchant Co. in exchange for production at scale.

6. Linens, in quantity, of unbleached cotton, for the care of the ill and the preparation of the dead. The representative indicated these would be distributed through the population’s internal channels.

7. Tinctures of a botanical character, list attached as Appendix A. Several of the plants named are not commercially cultivated and would require sourcing. The population offered to provide cuttings.

8. A quantity of fine beeswax, annually. The undersigned did not inquire as to its use.

9. Glass vessels of a specified shape and size, list attached as Appendix B. The shapes are unusual but not impossible to produce.

10. Salt, of a specific mineral profile, sourced from the brine operations of the Saginaw Bay region in Michigan. The population identified the wells by name and indicated that no substitute would be accepted.

The undersigned notes that the list, taken together, describes the inventory of a population attempting to protect itself from infection by means available to the modern household. There is nothing on this list that could not be sold, in modified form, to any educated American family.

The undersigned makes that observation factually and declines to interpret.

OBSERVATION SEVEN. TERMS OF PAYMENT

The population offered payment in gold, of refined grade, weight to be determined upon each delivery. The undersigned was shown a sample. The undersigned is not a metallurgist but has been trained to recognize fraudulent specimens. The sample was not fraudulent.

The population further offered, as part of the terms, the rights of formulation to the soap, the tinctures, and three additional preparations the representative did not name on the day of the visit but indicated would be transferred upon the signing of a contract.

The representative was explicit on this point.

“We are offering more than gold. We are offering the means by which a merchant could become a great deal more than a merchant. We understand that the country you are building is a country of buyers. We are offering you the formulations of a population that has spent a long time learning how to remain clean and how to remain alive. A buyer will not know where the formulations came from. A buyer does not need to know. A buyer needs only to be told that the product works. The product will work.”

The undersigned recorded this statement without comment.

The undersigned now records, without comment, that the representative appeared to understand the commercial environment of the United States in 1903 with a sophistication the undersigned would not have anticipated.

OBSERVATION EIGHT. CHARACTER OF THE INDIVIDUALS PRESENT

The undersigned was treated with formality. Meals were offered and accepted. The food was unremarkable and prepared in a manner consistent with the rural Midwest. No effort was made to conceal anything from the undersigned except the location of the site, the membership records of the broader population, and the contents of one structure near the western edge of the grounds.

The individuals present conduct themselves in the manner of a body of clerks. They are precise. They are quiet. They are unwilling to make small concessions. They are willing, the undersigned believes, to honor any contract entered into in good faith.

The representative indicated, without prompting, that the formality of the site was deliberate. “We have learned that an administrative seat reassures a merchant. A merchant wants a place to send the invoice.”

The undersigned was not threatened during the visit. The undersigned was not asked to swear to anything. The undersigned was, however, asked twice, in different phrasings, whether the report he intended to file would result in further federal contact with the population.

The undersigned answered, both times, that he could not predict the Department’s response.

The representative accepted this answer without visible reaction.

OBSERVATION NINE. RECOMMENDATION

The undersigned was instructed to make no commitments on behalf of the Department, and the undersigned has made none.

The undersigned will, however, offer the following observations for the consideration of the Inspector.

The population is, by its own account, dispersed across the cities and industrial centers of the country. It conducts itself in a manner that has not, to the undersigned’s knowledge, attracted the attention of any federal or state authority. It does not appear to pose a threat to the surrounding region. It does appear to be at substantial risk of loss from disease carried by the cities in which it resides.

The supply request, in the undersigned’s judgment, is reasonable on its face. The goods named are commercially available. The volumes are large but not extraordinary. The payment offered is more than adequate.

The undersigned further notes that the formulations offered as part of the terms appear to be of legitimate commercial value. A merchant in possession of those formulations could expand the scope of his operation considerably. The undersigned makes no recommendation regarding the proper recipient of such formulations. The undersigned notes only that they exist.

The Department’s prior contact with this population, referenced in Observation Five, is not on record in any file accessible to the undersigned. The undersigned has searched. The undersigned has not found.

The undersigned recommends that the Department decline further involvement and permit Halloran Merchant Co. to negotiate independently.

The undersigned recommends that this report be filed under restricted classification and not be referenced in subsequent communications with the Merchant Co.

The undersigned recommends that the population be permitted to remain undocumented in any federal record subject to public inquiry.

These recommendations are offered for the convenience of the Department. The undersigned will defer to whatever decision the Inspector finds appropriate.

CLOSING NOTE

The undersigned returned to Chicago on the 4th of October and to Washington on the 9th. The undersigned has spoken of this matter to no one outside the chain of command. The undersigned does not intend to do so.

The undersigned will note, for the record, that he was given a small gift upon his departure from the site. It was a bar of the soap referenced in the request. The undersigned has used it. It is the finest soap the undersigned has ever encountered.

The undersigned recognizes that this observation has no place in a field report. The undersigned includes it because the report would otherwise be incomplete.

It was 11:24 when Karen appeared at the entrance of Genny’s cube. She had her coat folded over one arm and her lunch bag in the other hand, which meant she was on her way out and had stopped on the way, which meant whatever this was would not take long, or would, because Karen’s sense of how long things took was different from everyone else’s.

She had a sticky note in her hand.

Genny saw the sticky note before she saw Karen’s face, which was usually the order things happened in. The sticky note was yellow. It had been folded once, then unfolded, then refolded along the same crease, and Karen was holding it by one corner the way you hold something you want to be done with.

Genny took her headphones off.

It was annual review week. She had forgotten. The reminder had been in her calendar in March and she had moved it twice and then it had quietly fallen off when she rebuilt her calendar in April, and she had not thought about it again until this exact moment, looking at a folded yellow sticky note in Karen’s hand at 11:24 on a Thursday.

“They were due last week. I’m doing them this week.” Karen extended the sticky note. “Here.”

Genny did not take it immediately. There was a half-second where she looked at the sticky note and then at Karen and then back at the sticky note, trying to determine whether the correct response was to take it or to wait for an explanation of what was on it.

Karen did not provide one.

“It’s your number,” she said. “And the percent. The percent is the second one. The dollar amount is the first.”

“Oh.”

“The HR portal updates Friday.”

Genny took the sticky note.

She did not unfold it. It felt strange to unfold it in front of Karen, even though Karen had clearly already read it, had likely written it, had certainly held it folded long enough to have memorized both numbers. Unfolding it would mean reacting to the numbers in front of the woman who had written them down. Genny was not prepared to do that.

She set the sticky note on her desk, face down.

Karen watched her do this.

“You can look at it,” Karen said.

“I will.”

“It’s a normal raise.”

“Okay.”

There was a silence that Genny recognized from previous Karen interactions. It was the silence Karen used when she had said something she expected a response to and was waiting to see what the response would be. The silence was not patient. It was evaluative.

“Thank you,” Genny said.

Karen nodded once. “HR wants me to do these in the conference room.” She said this the way she had said the cake was dry at Dennis Call’s retirement, which was without irritation, just identifying a problem with the system. “I don’t have time to do six of these in the conference room. So this is how I do them.”

“That makes sense.”

“Frank’s was Monday. He cried. In the cube. I wasn’t expecting that.”

“Oh.”

“I’m telling you so you know not to.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

“Good.”

Karen shifted her coat to the other arm. She had not left yet. The sticky note was still face down on Genny’s desk. Genny had her hands in her lap because she did not know what to do with them.

“If you have questions you can come to me directly. Or you can email HR.” She paused. “I would not recommend emailing HR.”

“Okay.”

Karen looked at her watch, which she still wore even though she also checked her phone. “Look at the number after I leave.”

Karen left.

Genny watched her go. She heard the elevator chime in the distance, then the soft mechanical sigh of the doors closing, then nothing. The office breathed out the way it always did at 11:30. Across the aisle, Blake stood up from his cube, looked toward Karen’s empty desk to confirm, and walked to the break room without putting on his jacket.

Genny sat with the sticky note face down for another full minute.

Then she turned it over.

The dollar amount was on top. The percent was below it, in slightly smaller numbers, as if Karen had run out of room and had to compress the second figure to fit. The handwriting was Karen’s, which Genny recognized from years of edits in margins. Both numbers were underlined twice.

It was a little better than last year’s.

Genny refolded the sticky note along its existing crease and put it in the back of her notebook, behind the divider, where she kept things she did not want to look at again that day but might need to look at later.

She put her headphones back on.

She had forty minutes of lunch hour and nobody to spend it with, which was the way she preferred it.

The Federal Liaison Officer typically assigned to incidents in the Northern Illinois corridor, Calder Voss, has been recused for the duration of this assessment, per Section Twelve of the Division Conduct Guidelines. Section One — Subject of Review

This review concerns the transfer event involving Illion Crepes, previously held at Statesville Correctional Center, scheduled for routine relocation to Pontiac Correctional Center on the night in question. Departure was scheduled for 01:00 hours. The subject was not relocated. The subject is no longer in custody.

Section Two — Operational Coordination

The transfer order was issued through the Statesville Classification system without a routing signature. The originating desk has not been identified by the Illinois Department of Corrections. State point of contact for this review is Deputy Warden M. Halloran, Statesville Operations.

This Division has confirmed, through internal channels, that the order was processed by an external coordinating party operating in an advisory capacity to Statesville Classification. The advisory party is known to this Division. The advisory party has not been notified of this review.

State personnel were not informed of the coordinating role and would not have recognized it had they been.

Section Three — Event Timeline

23:45 — Pre-transfer briefing conducted by shift supervisor Sgt. R. Velasquez. No anomalies reported.

00:32 — Subject removed from cell by four-officer escort detail. Subject was already standing, restrained per protocol, and reported to be cooperative.

00:38 — Escort party entered the secondary corridor. No deviations from posted route.

00:43 — Escort party reached the inner gate of the staging bay. Subject was staged at the threshold while the lead officer cleared the bay. Standard pause for clearance is documented at four to six seconds.

00:43 — Subject was no longer present at the staging position. Restraints were recovered intact at the location of staging. Both wrist and ankle restraints remained closed.

00:44 — Standard alarm protocols were initiated. Initial bay sweep completed without recovery.

01:02 — Facility lockdown completed. Posted lockdown procedure for Statesville is fourteen minutes. The lockdown completed eighteen minutes after subject disappearance.

01:14 — Surface-facing communication issued by Illinois Department of Corrections describing the event as an escape during transfer preparation.

03:46 — Pattern Interference Division notified through standard cross-agency channels by Field Operations Coordination, Region IV.

07:18 — Surface-level homicide reported in Lockport, Illinois, at the base of a residential stairwell on the State Street corridor. Local response designated as random encounter.

Section Four — Assessment of Cause

The mechanical means by which the subject departed restraints have not been determined and will not be determined within the scope of this review.

The reviewing officer notes that no field within standard incident classification accommodates the observed condition of the recovered restraints. A new field has not been requested at this time.

Section Five — Personnel Observations

A documented observer assigned to the transfer detail has been interviewed under separate cover (PID-INT-2026-0207). The observer’s account is consistent with material physical evidence and has been entered into a record maintained outside the Department of Corrections.

The observer has been returned to active duty. No further action is recommended with regard to this individual at this time. Continued behavioral monitoring is suggested but not mandated.

Section Six — Correlated Case Notation

The surface-level homicide referenced in the timeline above, occurring approximately six hours and thirty-five minutes after subject disappearance, has been entered into this Division’s correlated case index under reference PID-CC-2026-0211. Surface reporting attributes the incident to a random encounter following the escape, with the subject named as suspect. Public framing remains within compliance parameters. No correction has been recommended.

The reviewing officer notes that the proximity of the homicide location to known associations of the subject, and the timing relative to subject disappearance, have been logged for record-keeping purposes only. No causal relationship beyond the surface attribution has been established by this review.

Section Seven — Forward Posture

The subject is to be considered at large.

Standard apprehension protocols are not being initiated. Coordination with state and local law enforcement regarding the subject’s whereabouts will continue at the level of routine notification. No federal field assets have been deployed in pursuit.

Re-acquisition is not anticipated within the current operational cycle.

Section Eight — Recusal Note

The Federal Liaison Officer recused from this review remains on active assignment in unrelated matters. Reassignment is not under consideration. The recusal applies only to this specific event and the correlated case noted above. The recusal does not appear in any Surface-facing record.

Officer: I wasn’t aware.

Interviewer: I’m telling you now.

The officer adjusts his posture. The recording captures the sound of a chair settling.

Interviewer: Continue.

Officer: We pulled him from his cell at 00:32. He was already up.

Interviewer: Standing or seated.

Officer: Standing. Boots on. Jumpsuit fastened. He was at the door.

Interviewer: Was that unusual.

Officer: For most inmates, yes.

Interviewer: For him.

Officer: No.

Interviewer: How long had he been awake.

Officer: I don’t know. He didn’t sleep on a normal cycle.

Interviewer: Define normal cycle.

Officer: Most inmates settle in by 22:00. Quiet by 23:30. He stayed up later. He woke earlier. He didn’t seem tired during yard. I noticed.

Interviewer: Did you log it.

Officer: There isn’t a field for that.

Interviewer: There is. It’s on page four of the behavioral observation form.

Officer: I never used it.

Interviewer: Why not.

Officer: Because no one reads page four.

Officer: No.

Interviewer: You’re certain.

Officer: I’m certain of who I saw.

Interviewer: That isn’t the same answer.

Officer: It’s the answer I can give.

A longer pause. The recording captures the building ventilation.

Interviewer: At what point did you lose visual contact.

Officer: Inner gate. We staged him at the threshold while the second officer cleared the bay. Standard pause. Maybe four seconds. When I looked back, he was facing the wrong direction.

Interviewer: Toward what.

Officer: Toward the corridor we came from.

Officer: I don’t remember the date.

Interviewer: Yard rotation. You were posted at the southwest tower. Crepes approached the fence line during the second hour and spoke to you for approximately ninety seconds.

Officer: That happened.

Interviewer: What did he say.

Officer: He asked me how my mother was doing.

Interviewer: Had you discussed your mother with him before.

Officer: No.

Interviewer: Had you discussed your mother with anyone at the facility.

Officer: No.

Interviewer: Was your mother ill at that time.

Officer: She had been diagnosed eight days earlier.

Interviewer: Did you respond.

Officer: I told him to step back from the fence.

Interviewer: Did you log the exchange.

Officer: No.

Interviewer: Why not.

Officer: Because I didn’t know how to write it down.

The interviewer does not respond immediately. The recording continues.

Interviewer: Are there other exchanges you did not log.

Officer: Yes.

Interviewer: How many.

Officer: I don’t have a count.

Interviewer: An estimate.

Officer: Maybe half a dozen. Over the years.

Interviewer: All initiated by him.

Officer: All initiated by him.

Interviewer: All concerning information you had not shared.

Officer: Yes.

Interviewer: Did you discuss this with your supervisor.

Officer: No.

Officer: She said it sounded like the kind of thing you don’t want to think about.

Officer: And I stopped thinking about it.

A longer pause. The recording captures a faint mechanical sound from the hallway.

Interviewer: The visitor log for Crepes shows eight entries over five years. Seven are accounted for. One is not.

Officer: I don’t review the visitor logs.

Interviewer: The unaccounted entry occurred on March 3rd of this year. The signature is illegible. The escort officer on duty was you.

Officer: I escort visitors when I’m assigned to processing.

Interviewer: Do you remember this one.

Officer: I remember a man.

Interviewer: Describe him.

Officer: Tall. Dark coat. He moved like he wasn’t in a hurry.

Interviewer: Did he sign in.

Officer: He wrote something. I didn’t read it.

Interviewer: Did he show identification.

Officer: He showed something. I didn’t recognize the format.

Interviewer: Did you ask.

Officer: No.

Interviewer: Why not.

Officer: Because I didn’t think I was supposed to.

Interviewer: Who told you that.

Officer: No one. I just understood it.

The interviewer makes a note. The pen is audible.

Interviewer: Officer Marek, I want to be clear about the purpose of this interview.

Officer: All right.

Interviewer: You are not the subject of an investigation.

Officer: All right.

Interviewer: You are a documented observer.

Officer: I don’t know what that means.

Interviewer: It means your account has been entered into a record that is maintained outside the Department of Corrections.

Officer: That’s not an answer.

A pause. The officer does not respond.

Officer: And if I do.

Interviewer: The system will respond.

Officer: To me.

Officer: That isn’t the same thing.

The chair shifts. The officer does not stand.

The email had come from HR three weeks earlier with the subject line: Celebrating Dennis! and a clipart image of balloons that had not rendered correctly on Paul’s monitor, showing up instead as two gray rectangles and a question mark.

He had marked it as attended and moved on.

The party was in the third floor conference room, the big one they used for all-hands that nobody liked because the air conditioning ran too cold and the chairs were stackable. Someone had pushed the tables to one side and covered them with a paper tablecloth in MSS oxblood that was slightly too short, showing an inch of folding table on each end. There was a sheet cake. There was a row of water bottles and cans of soda. There was a banner that said HAPPY RETIREMENT DENNIS in individual letters spaced unevenly, so the N at the end was closer to the wall than to the S.

Paul got there at 1:07, seven minutes after it started. He took a piece of cake he did not want and stood near the window.

Dennis was near the door shaking hands. Paul had worked under him for about fourteen months when Dennis was running the risk adjacency side of product development, before the reorg that moved him to Creative Operations and then again to something in Brand Alignment that Paul had never fully tracked. They had gotten along fine. Paul had no strong feelings about him in either direction.

He was working on the cake, which was dry, when the woman appeared next to him.

She was looking at the banner.

“The spacing,” she said.

Paul looked at the banner. “Yes.”

“Someone did that by hand. You can tell because the D and the E are too close together and there’s too much space before the N. If you’re going to do it by hand you should measure first.”

“Sure,” Paul said.

She looked at his cake. “Is it dry.”

“A little.”

“It’s always dry when they order from that place. There’s a better option at the same price point. I’ve mentioned it twice.” She looked back at the banner. “Karen,” she said, not quite extending her hand.

“Paul.”

“Which department.”

“Risk and Analysis. Product side.”

She nodded. “I was in Dennis’s group for about two years when he was on the fourth floor. Before Creative.”

“I had him in product development.”

“He was different in product development,” she said. “More decisive.”

“He was fine when I had him,” Paul said.

“Fine is different from decisive.”

Paul ate some cake and did not respond to that.

Across the room Dennis was laughing at something. Someone had given him a card he was holding but hadn’t opened. The punch bowl ladle had slid in again and nobody was fixing it.

“Do you know what he’s doing after,” Karen asked.

“Consulting, I think. Someone mentioned it.”

“Everyone says consulting,” she said. “It usually means nothing for six months and then either something works out or it doesn’t.” She turned slightly toward him. “What department did you say.”

“Risk and Analysis.”

“The Nostalgia Capsule.”

“Among other things.”

She looked at him. “I had a complaint come through classification last quarter. Someone in Orland Park. The unit kept producing a scent profile that didn’t match the purchase environment.”

“We handle those,” Paul said.

“I know you handle them. I’m saying one came through classification first, which it shouldn’t have, because whoever set up the intake routing sent it to the wrong queue.” She paused. “That was fixed.”

“Good,” Paul said.

“I fixed it,” she said.

“Good,” Paul said again.

Across the room someone was trying to get people together for a photo. Dennis was being positioned in front of the banner, which meant the uneven spacing was going to end up in whatever got sent to the all-staff email later.

“Are you staying for the photo,” Karen asked.

Paul checked his phone. Nineteen open tickets and a Legal follow-up he hadn’t read. “Probably not much longer,” he said.

Karen set her plate on the windowsill. The cake was mostly uneaten. She looked at the banner one more time. “Someone should fix it before they take the photo,” she said.

Nobody fixed it.

The photo was taken.

Paul said a brief goodbye to Dennis on his way out, who remembered his name. He took the stairs back to the fourth floor, sat down, and opened his email.

Nineteen tickets. The Legal follow-up was about revised language for Category 3 disclosures. Full template review, probably another round with compliance before anything changed.

He opened the first ticket and started reading.

Forty-three open tickets was not a bad number for a Tuesday in Q2.

Paul had seen worse. The winter buyers always circled back in spring, once the newness wore off and they had been living with the thing long enough to have thoughts about it. Most of the thoughts were manageable. A few required actual responses. He had gotten good at knowing which was which before he even finished the subject line.

He opened 284767.

The user was a woman named Carol, Naperville address, submitted through the standard warranty portal. She had filled out every field including the optional ones, which Paul genuinely appreciated. The category section alone saved him a routing step, and most people skipped it entirely like it was asking something personal.

Carol had selected: Unexpected Environmental Response.

Her written description:

I have been using the Nostalgia Capsule for approximately six weeks on my kitchen counter as directed. For the past two weeks, my kitchen smells like my first office job. I worked there from 1987 to 1993. It was a data entry position at an insurance company in Chicago. The smell is very specific. It is the smell of the break room on Fridays when someone brought in donuts. I have not had donuts in my kitchen. I do not work in insurance. I would like the smell to stop. I would also like to understand why I have started making coffee at 5:47 a.m. every morning when I have not set an alarm and do not have a reason to be awake at that time. I did not start work at the insurance company until 9 a.m. but I took the train and had to leave by 6:52. I have not taken a train in eleven years.

He read it twice, which was more than most tickets got.

The serial number she included pulled up clean. Standard retail unit, first consumer batch, no modifications, no flags. Nothing unusual about it at all except that it had been sitting on someone’s kitchen counter running continuously for six weeks, which was the part the usage guide specifically addressed on page four and which most people did not read.

Category 2 behavioral echo. Scent loop with secondary routine reinforcement. He had written that note so many times this quarter that he could type it without looking at the keys.

He opened his response template.

Dear Carol,

Thank you for reaching out to May Season Studio. We appreciate your detailed account and are happy to assist.

Based on the information provided, your Nostalgia Capsule appears to be functioning within normal operational parameters. The sensory experience you are describing, including ambient scent recurrence and the emergence of associated routines, is a known characteristic of extended use in high-familiarity environments.

He had almost written “documented feature” before catching himself. Legal had been very clear about that one in the March guidance memo. Known characteristic. Not feature. Features implied intent.

The Nostalgia Capsule is designed to engage with ambient memory environments. In some cases, particularly with consistent daily use over several weeks, users may notice heightened sensory familiarity or mild behavioral alignment with past routines. This is not a malfunction.

That paragraph had been approved word for word. He did not touch it.

To restore your preferred sensory baseline, we recommend moving the unit to a lower-traffic area of your home, such as a guest room or storage space, and reducing active use to three to four hours per day. Most users report a return to standard sensory experience within two weeks.

It was a nice enough day outside. He could see the edge of the east lawn from where he sat, the grounds crew out there doing whatever they did to keep things looking the way the campus always looked. A delivery van had been idling at the loading dock for a while.

He had a meeting at eleven. Fourteen tickets between now and then.

He kept typing.

Three weeks later, same corridor.

The call came through just after six. A woman and her dog, both dead, out on 159th between Gougar and Cedar. Less than half a mile from the furniture store, which Lorin had not stopped thinking about since they filed the incomplete and heard nothing back. Hit and run. Driver unidentified. The classification had a category this time. It wasn’t the right one.

Lorin read it on the way over and kept it to himself.

Merrit drove. March evening, that specific window where the sun is already gone but the sky hasn’t committed to dark yet. Fields on both sides of 159th. The 355 overpass a few hundred yards back. Nothing out here that explained two incidents on the same quarter mile of road three weeks apart.

They came in from the Gougar side.

Merrit eased off the gas before either of them saw the lights. Just slowed, the way he did when something reached him before it had a name. The van coasted.

“Feel that,” he said.

Lorin felt it. Low pressure over the road, close to the asphalt. Not a signature exactly. More like the ground had been holding something for a while and hadn’t decided what to do with it yet.

The scene came into view around a shallow bend. Two sheriff’s vehicles angled across the eastbound lane, flares set at a distance. Standard rural fatality response. Nothing about the positioning read wrong to anyone who didn’t know what to look for.

Lorin looked past the vehicles.

A man was standing at the tree line on the far shoulder. Not with the deputies. Not doing anything in particular. He had been there long enough that he’d stopped needing to look purposeful about it. He was already facing the van when Lorin looked at him.

Merrit had seen him too. The van slowed to almost nothing.

The man came over without being waved over. Walked around to the driver’s side, unhurried. Merrit lowered the window. Up close he was tall, composed in a way that wasn’t performed. He looked at Lorin first, then Merrit, then back at Lorin. Didn’t introduce himself.

“I appreciate you coming out,” he said. Even, not unfriendly. “This one’s ours.”

Lorin glanced past him. One of the deputies had looked over at the van and looked away again quickly, the way you do when you’ve already been told something.

“The furniture store too,” Lorin said.

Not a question. The man didn’t take it as one.

“Yes. Both of them.”

He let the pause sit. Didn’t seem to need to fill it.

“We’ll take it from here.”

Merrit looked at Lorin. Lorin looked at the road, the flares, the fields past the shoulder going dark, then back at the man.

“Understood,” he said.

The man stepped back. Merrit brought the window up and turned the van around on the gravel shoulder. They drove back toward Gougar without saying anything.

“Federal,” Merrit said eventually.

“Yes.”

“Pattern unit.”

“That’s my read.”

The Ramsey show was off for some reason. Just road noise.

“So it’s not new,” Merrit said. “Whatever’s out there.”

“No,” Lorin said. “It’s not new.”

“How long you think it’s been going.”

Lorin didn’t answer. He opened the corrective log and pulled up the 159th file. Four lines. Responded to site. Access declined, federal jurisdiction claimed. No corrective action taken. Refer to Pattern Interference Division for follow-up.

He left the status field open. No closure date.

He’d check it again next week. He already knew what he’d find.

The call came in at 11:42 a.m.

Daytime. That was the first unusual thing. Corrective Unit 9 did not typically work days. Day calls meant something had gone wrong in a way that couldn’t wait for dark, which meant it had gone wrong badly enough that someone upstairs had already made a decision about the timeline.

The location was flagged as a commercial retail corridor. Out on 159th, between Gougar and Cedar, right off the 355 exit. Homer Glen bleeding into Lockport depending on which side of the lot you were standing on. The kind of stretch that had filled in over the years without anyone planning it. Strip centers, a few standalone buildings, the kind of retail that shows up when land gets cheap enough.

Lorin read the classification twice. Retail corridor. No further detail. No origin signature. No category.

He showed Merrit.

Merrit looked at it for a moment. “No category.”

“No category.”

They took the van.

Twenty minutes out on I-355 and off at 159th. Long enough for Lorin to pull the address and run a basic surface scan. Nothing in the location history. No prior corrective calls. No registered activity of any kind. Clean in a way that was either reassuring or the kind of clean that meant someone had been paying attention to it for a long time.

They smelled it before they saw it.

Not the usual signatures. Not burnt sugar or copper or the particular cold that came off construct activity. This was something older and denser, the way a forest smells after something heavy has moved through it. Raw timber and turned earth and something underneath both of those that Lorin couldn’t place.

Merrit rolled down his window. “That’s not standard.”

“No,” Lorin said.

They came around the bend and slowed.

The building was visible from half a block away. The front wall had come in. Not collapsed from age or weather. Come in, like something had made a decision about it. Emergency vehicles filled the lot. Two squad cars. A fire engine sitting idle with no active call to justify it. A news van at the far end of the block, satellite arm up, nobody in front of a camera yet.

Lorin counted twelve personnel visible. Possibly more inside.

He pulled to the curb and cut the engine.

They sat for a moment without saying anything.

“Police got here first,” Merrit said.

“Yes.”

“We’re not getting in there.”

“No.”

They got out anyway. Protocol required a site assessment even when access was blocked. Lorin logged the time and started a slow walk along the perimeter, the kind that looked like a neighbor taking stock. Merrit drifted the other direction, hands in his jacket, doing the same.

The signature was harder to read from the outside. It sat low, close to the structure, like whatever it was hadn’t fully decided to leave. Not projecting. Not dissipating. Just waiting in the walls.

Lorin stopped at the corner of the adjacent lot. From there he could see through the breach into the showroom. Furniture overturned. Debris across the floor. A truck still inside, cab facing out, like it had reconsidered halfway through. The wood from the displays had scattered across the concrete in a pattern that didn’t entirely match the angle of impact.

He looked at the wood for a long time.

The officers were doing what officers did at scenes like this. Photographing. Measuring. One of them was talking to a man near the door with a clipboard, probably the owner, nodding slowly the way people nod when they’re still in the part that hasn’t caught up with them yet.

None of them were looking at the right things.

Merrit came back around and stopped beside him.

“Feel that,” Merrit said. It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.”

“What is it.”

Lorin had been doing this long enough to know most signatures on contact. Construct bleed. Containment failure. Lineage event. Surface contamination. Each one had a texture, a weight, a particular way it settled in the air around a site.

This didn’t match any of them cleanly. It sat adjacent to several at once, like something that had moved through multiple categories on its way to becoming whatever it currently was. Old. Dense. Not aggressive. Not residual either. Present in a way that felt deliberate.

“I don’t know,” he said.

Merrit looked at him.

“Log it unclassified,” Lorin said. “We’ll see if anything comes back on the signature.”

They walked back to the van. Lorin typed the report while Merrit pulled away from the curb.

Incomplete corrective response. Site inaccessible, active law enforcement presence. Perimeter assessment only. Signature anomaly detected, origin unclassified. Materials of note: aged timber, traditional construction methods, long-term site occupancy. Recommend follow-up pending site clearance.

He submitted it and pocketed his phone.

The news van was still there as they passed. Nobody had gone live yet. A producer stood by the side door scrolling through something, waiting for a reason to.

Merrit drove without talking for a while. The river came and went on their left, flat and dark between the trees.

“First time in a while you didn’t know,” he said eventually.

“Yes,” Lorin said.

“That bother you.”

Lorin watched the road.

“Not yet,” he said.

Pre-commercial Nostalgia Capsule units were reviewed and documented as accounted for in a prior operational cycle. Facilities Coordination has no record of units outside controlled storage.

The origin of the unit recovered at the Morris site is unresolved.

This discrepancy has been logged.

4. CONTAINMENT

Both incidents have been physically resolved. No residual signature activity at either site. No active breach events as of this filing.

Corrective Unit 9 is on standard standby. No additional deployment authorized.

Public framing remains within compliance parameters.

5. NOTE TO EXTERNAL DISTRIBUTION
