I created it because corporate culture started to feel mythological.

POLICY CLARIFICATION

While MSS encourages employees to attend to personal wellness needs during the workday when appropriate, personal care activities must not be conducted in shared workspaces.

Specifically, the following activities are discouraged or prohibited in shared workspaces:

Examples of Discouraged Activities

Nail clipping, filing, or trimming

Use of grooming tools that produce audible noise during meetings or calls

Hair brushing or styling that sheds or disperses debris

Extended personal grooming during collaborative work sessions

Use of handheld mirrors at desks for grooming purposes

Examples of Prohibited Activities

Application, processing, or removal of facial masks, peels, scrubs, or treatments

Skin exfoliation, shedding, or peeling procedures

Use of chemical, enzymatic, or reactive skincare products

Any personal care activity that produces noticeable scent, vapor, residue, sound, or visual disruption

Trimming, scraping, or maintenance of skin, nails, or hair beyond basic hygiene

Use of tools designed for personal care outside of restroom or wellness spaces

Conducting personal care activities while on live calls or meetings, regardless of mute status

Personal care activities visible to others that may reasonably cause discomfort, distraction, or confusion

Any activity involving bodily byproducts or materials requiring disposal beyond standard waste

These examples are not exhaustive.

APPROPRIATE LOCATIONS

Employees wishing to conduct personal care activities during the workday must do so in:

Restrooms

Designated wellness rooms

Fully private spaces not visible or audible to others

Personal care activities should not be conducted at desks, cubicles, or during meetings, even if the employee believes the activity to be discreet.

MEDICAL ACCOMMODATIONS

MSS recognizes that certain medical or health-related needs may require accommodation.

Employees seeking accommodation for medically necessary personal care activities should contact Human Resources to discuss appropriate arrangements. Documentation may be required.

ENFORCEMENT

Failure to adhere to this policy may result in corrective action, up to and including disciplinary measures, in accordance with MSS workplace conduct guidelines.

The storage archive was not secret.

That mattered.

It existed because it had to. Every company that built at scale accumulated things that were finished but not gone. Prototypes that never shipped. Concepts that tested well and failed quietly. Packaging variations no one remembered approving.

The room was climate-controlled, cataloged, and ignored.

Which was the point.

Lorin had been there once before. Long enough to understand how little attention anything inside received once it had an inventory number and a shelf assignment.

Henry approved the transfer without hesitation.

“If it’s stable,” he said, already moving on to the next line item, “then store it.”

“It’s stable,” Lorin replied.

They moved the unit after hours. Not because it was dangerous, but because the service corridors were easier when fewer people were around. The crate rolled cleanly over the concrete, the ticking barely audible unless you were listening for it.

Nothing objected.

No alarms. No access errors. The archive door opened on the first attempt.

Inside, the shelves extended farther than most people expected. Dense rows of labeled containers, stacked with years of decisions that no longer needed defending. Everything reduced to codes, dates, and placement logic.

Thirteen remained.

It was still in its crate.

Henry insisted on that. Not out of fear or superstition, but because there was no procedural reason to change the sequence. The manual did not prioritize order. It only required completion.

“Let the others finish first,” he said. “Then we deal with it.”

Lorin logged the decision without comment.

Unit thirteen deferred.

The crate ticked.

It was quieter than the others had been. Less eager. The sound came and went, uneven, like a clock someone kept bumping with their elbow and then forgetting about. It did not respond to proximity. It did not adjust when the lights dimmed or when the bay emptied overnight.

“Looks smaller,” Merrit said.

“It isn’t,” Lorin replied. He checked the measurements anyway. They matched the spec exactly.

They began dismantling using approved tools and sequence. No improvisation. No shortcuts.

The first step involved casing separation. The bolts turned easily. The panels came away cleanly. Internal access was achieved without resistance.

Then the unit adjusted.

Not quickly. Not defensively. It wrapped the tool Merrit was using with a thin layer of metallic ribbon, neat and precise, then released it once the motion was complete. The tool came back warmer than before.

“That’s new,” Merrit said.

Lorin logged it.

They switched tools. The same thing happened.

They changed angles. The unit compensated. They applied force. The unit redistributed it.

It wrapped the table legs next. Not tightly. Just enough to stabilize them. When Merrit kicked the table in frustration, the ribbon loosened and settled again, correcting the imbalance.

“It’s not repairing,” Merrit said.

“No,” Lorin replied. “It’s completing.”

They escalated to controlled disassembly.

The enclosure door was wrapped during the process. Not sealed. Just reinforced. Facilities took note.

The overhead cable tray followed next. The unit pulled it into a clean spiral, evenly spaced, as if following a template. Undoing it took two hours and three people.

At no point did the unit behave aggressively.

At no point did it pause.

“Power it down,” Henry said from behind the glass.

“It isn’t powered,” Merrit replied.

Henry exhaled through his nose. “Then deactivate it.”

They applied the deactivation field.

That mattered to Henry. He liked being able to say that if anyone ever asked, which they rarely did. Still, he said it out loud once, just to make sure it existed in the room.

The units were unloaded through the delivery entrance just after lunch, the quiet part of the day when most departments were either eating or pretending to work. Each crate was rolled one by one into the corrective bay, the same space used for neutralization, dismantling, and the occasional controlled demonstration when someone from leadership wanted to see how problems were handled.

Lorin logged each unit as it crossed the threshold. Time. Condition. Seal intact. Audible activity present. He noted the ticking. The system did not have a preset field for anything subjective, so he did not add one.

Merrit handled placement. He always did. He moved with the steady economy of someone who knew exactly how much force equipment could tolerate before it became a problem. The crates were arranged in two clean rows, spaced evenly, aligned with the floor markings. Twelve total.

Thirteen sat apart at the end.

“You want to start with that one,” Merrit asked, nodding toward it.

“No,” Lorin said without looking up. “We start at one.”

Henry stood off to the side, arms crossed, jacket still on like he intended to leave at any moment. He had already forwarded the termination notice to Legal, Facilities, and Risk Management. It was addressed to Henry, our manager, with the usual layer of corporate politeness laid on thick.

Subject: Wrap-Assist L12 Program Termination

Effective immediately, all remaining prototype units from the L12 program are to be decommissioned and removed from active inventory. Hardware is classified as non-salvageable, non-returnable, and non-usable.

Please coordinate disposal per existing agreements.

Thank you for your help.

Henry printed the email anyway. He always did, even though everything lived in the system. He liked having something physical when the work crossed into the kind of space that didn’t technically exist but still needed doing.

He slid the page across the break room table to me and Merrit while the Keurig made a sound like it was reconsidering its life choices.

“New assignment,” he said. “R&D cut a project.”

Merrit glanced at the subject line and raised an eyebrow. “Gift wrap.”

“Automatic gift wrap,” Henry corrected. “Consumer concept. Holiday assist. It didn’t work out.”

“That tracks,” Merrit said. “Did someone finally get taken out by a bow?”

Henry ignored him. He always ignored Merrit’s first joke. Let it burn itself out.

“There are thirteen units,” Henry continued. “All prototypes. They want them decommissioned and removed today.”

The email didn’t mention injuries. It never did. “Non-salvageable” was corporate shorthand for too risky to sell.

“Where are they,” I asked, already pulling out my notebook.

“Joliet testing facility,” Henry said. “They’ve been isolated there since the last incident.”

“Incident,” Merrit repeated.

“Load them first,” he said. “We’ll review disposal options once they’re under our control. And don’t wear your disposal jumpsuits through the main hallways. He paused, then added, “People get nervous when they see you in them.”

Contractor badges had the black-and-orange stripe. Regular employees were white. Everyone noticed, even if no one said anything.

We took the van.

From the outside, May Season Studio looked expensive and stable. Glass, steel, landscaping trimmed on a schedule. On the inside, departments like ours made sure it stayed that way.

Joliet was about forty-five minutes down I-355 and west on I-80. The testing facility looked like a shipping warehouse if you didn’t know better. No windows. Minimal signage. The logo was small enough to ignore.

The dock door was half open.

Inside, the air was cold in a way that came from concrete and fluorescent lights, not weather. A single R&D engineer waited near a stack of crates pushed against the far wall. Badge on a lanyard. Tablet in hand. The kind of engineer who had learned not to react to things anymore.

“L12 program,” he said, nodding toward the crates. “Wrap-Assist modules. Prototypes only. Tagged and logged.”

He didn’t offer his name. We didn’t ask.

“Curtain event,” Merrit echoed.

The handler paused just long enough to be noticeable.

“It wrapped the room,” he said finally. “Floor to ceiling. Curtains, cables, fixtures. One of ours was inside. He lived.”

“Lucky,” Merrit said.

“Legal didn’t think so,” the handler replied. “After that, the project went from innovation to liability.”

He checked something off on his tablet.

“They’re already logged out under your manager’s cost center,” he added. “As far as the system’s concerned, they’re gone.”

Which meant if they stayed here, it would look like theft. On paper, they no longer existed.

“Any others,” I asked. “Loose units. Labs.”

“Thirteen shipped. Thirteen here,” he said. “What happens next isn’t my problem.”

He walked away without looking back.

We started loading.

The first crate squeaked when the pallet jack slid underneath. Not loud, but sharp enough to echo. The crate felt heavier than it should have. R&D always overbuilt. Pride, mostly.

“Feels like a coffin,” Merrit said.

“Don’t anthropomorphize,” I replied, steadying the load.

We lined up the first four in the van, strapped them down, and went back for more. By crate seven, the pattern stopped being interesting. Same labels. Same red sticker. Same scrape marks.

Crate nine had writing scrawled on the side.

Someone had drawn a small angry face beneath it.

The call ended.

The van hummed along the road. Traffic thinned. The sky stayed flat. Somewhere behind us, just beyond the thin metal wall, something ticked softly at its own pace.

We didn’t talk.

That part came later, when disposal stopped behaving like disposal and started behaving like persistence.

Genny did not need another reason to go to the basement.

The email had shown up two weeks ago with the subject line: PC/Hardware Refresh Eligibility. At first she ignored it. Anything with the word “eligibility” usually meant more training or some corporate initiative that required pretending to care. Then her laptop froze for the third time that day, fan screaming, the screen stuck on a spreadsheet she definitely did not remember updating.

She shut the lid. Opened it. Undocked it. Nothing. It stayed black for a full minute before waking up like nothing had happened.

That was enough. She clicked the email.

The process looked simple. Submit a ticket. Wait for approval. Pick up a new device at the Tech Bar in the lower level of Building 8. Whoever named it the Tech Bar deserved a raise. It sounded like a place that served mocktails and light bites, not where IT lived next to a storage closet with flickering lights.

She filled out the form on Friday afternoon. By Monday morning, the appointment was set.

“New laptop?” Karen said when Genny mentioned she’d be stepping away. “Oh, that must be nice. Didn’t realize you needed a new one already.” The smirk felt like a tap on the shoulder with a ruler.

Genny never knew if Karen was joking. She doubted Karen knew either.

She grabbed her old laptop, the one that had been overheating since late spring, and walked toward the elevator. The Lisle headquarters always looked impressive from the parking lot. Glass buildings reflecting the sky. Landscaping trimmed to corporate perfection. A campus layout that looked intentional from far away.

Inside, it was humming lights, carpet that always felt slightly damp no matter the season, and that smell every corporate building had: stale HVAC mixed with something citrusy that had long given up. Still nicer than her previous job.

The elevator was the only reliable route to the lower levels. Only certain stairwells went all the way down; the rest stopped at floor one like the building forgot to finish itself. She had stopped questioning it.

The doors opened to the familiar basement hallway. The air was colder, sharper. The lights buzzed just a little louder. The Tech Bar sat at the end of a T-intersection, glowing slightly too bright under recessed lighting. You could walk the other direction, but no one ever explained what was down there, and Genny wasn’t curious enough to find out.

Inside, it looked exactly like IT. Tall counters. Rolling chairs. Racks of labeled cables. A dented coffee maker that made a clicking noise every few minutes. Holiday decorations taped to the walls, slightly crooked. Today’s theme was Fall Harvest. Someone had aggressively committed to orange garland.

Three Threadlings stood behind the counter, all wearing slate sweaters with their badges clipped neatly to their collars. They looked composed and ready, like they were waiting for the next crisis with a calmness that almost felt practiced.

The one closest to her looked up the second she stepped forward.

“Hi,” he said. “Ticket number or employee ID, whichever you prefer.”

“Uh,” she said, lifting her laptop. “I have an appointment. Hardware refresh. For Genny.”

He nodded halfway through her sentence. “Genny from Product Classification. Twenty-seven lifetime tickets. Four hardware. Nine software. The rest access-related.”

He said it like he was reading a weather report. Neutral. Factual. Not even a hint of judgment.

Another Threadling, shorter and rounder, slid a rolling chair behind her like he knew she’d appreciate it before she realized she did.

“How do you know that,” she asked.

“We read,” he said. “We remember. I’m Rowan.”

His badge confirmed it. His eyes were a brown-gold shade that shifted slightly with the overhead lighting. If she stared for more than a second, the threads in his sweater seemed to align with faint lines beneath his skin. Classic Threadling detail. Just noticeable enough if you caught it at the right angle.

She did not stare.

Rowan took her old laptop carefully. He checked the tag, ran a diagnostic, and winced when the fan sputtered like an old lawnmower.

“You really used this one to the end,” he said. “It earned retirement.”

He disappeared for a moment, spoke with another tech, and returned with a new machine. Matte finish. Neutral.

“Here you go,” he said, turning the screen toward her. “Already imaged. Network share mapped. Common apps installed. The rest will load on their own. Your files should show up within the hour.”

He said it like a traffic update on the radio. Calm. Predictable.

Another tech set a small packet on the counter. Microfiber cloth. Cable tie. “Getting started” card. Two granola bars.

“We see a lot of empty lunchboxes during refresh week,” he said.

“You give everyone snacks,” she asked.

“Only the ones who definitely skipped grocery shopping,” he said.

He wasn’t wrong.

She left with the new laptop and the strange sensation of having been handled with extreme care.

Upstairs, the new machine worked perfectly. No screaming fans. No freezes. No passive-aggressive pop-ups. Even Karen correcting her work felt manageable.

She placed the laptop down. “I broke it.”

He touched the lid gently. “What happened.”

“Coffee,” she said. “A lot.”

He nodded like this was a forecast he had predicted. The other Threadlings barely reacted.

Karen walked by and paused.

“That was quick,” she said.

“Yes,” Genny said. “IT was really nice about it.”

“They always are,” Karen replied. “That’s what makes me nervous.”

She kept walking.

Genny looked at the new laptop, her distant coffee, and the quiet office. She thought about how many tiny disasters the Tech Bar handled without anyone upstairs noticing. There was something comforting in that.

She opened a new document and got back to work.

The call came in just after nine. Not late enough to count as overtime, not early enough for anyone to pretend it could wait until morning. The message was short. Coordinates outside Morris. A single line beneath it: correction required. No details. No signature. Nothing unusual about that.

Lorin closed the message and slid the phone into the inside pocket of his jacket. He didn’t sigh. He didn’t react at all. He grabbed his gloves, tapped Merrit’s cube wall with his hand, and they walked to the van without speaking. Correction Unit 9 didn’t do small talk.

The drive stayed quiet in the usual way. Highway lights thinning out as they drove down I-80. Empty fields holding on to whatever warmth was left from the day. A few trucks pushing west. One of those nights where everything looked fine from far away but wrong up close. Merrit had the Ramsey show on low, just enough noise to keep them awake without asking for anything.

The coordinates sent them past a shuttered warehouse and into a field that always looked abandoned, even in daylight. Merrit slowed the van and let the headlights roll over a strip of wind-flattened grass, then pulled off the service road. They had done this enough to know they were close when the air started getting heavier.

They stepped out, boots sinking slightly into soft ground. It was colder than it should have been. Lorin felt it in his hands first. Not weather. Something else.

“Same as last time,” Merrit said, pulling the shovels from the back.

“Not quite,” Lorin answered. He didn’t explain. He didn’t need to. The shift in the air would reach Merrit soon.

They walked toward the center of the field, guided by instinct and the faint vibration under the soil. It wasn’t loud. Just a low hum deep enough to settle into their knees. The same kind of hum you hear from old office lights when no one bothers to fix them. Ahead of them, the ground dipped into a shallow depression. The edges looked softened, not burned. Like the soil was trying to remember what shape it used to be.

Merrit crouched down. “Something landed.”

“Or appeared,” Lorin said. “Hard to tell these days.”

The scent reached them next. Burnt sugar mixed with copier toner. The exact smell of a mid-afternoon office where too many people reheated lunches. It didn’t belong here.

Lorin scanned the depression. There were impressions in the dirt. Footprints, but unstable ones. They blurred at the edges, like someone stepped down and never fully committed to being real.

Merrit stiffened. “There.”

The figure lay curled in the center of the crater. Small. Loose-limbed. A shape that looked human if you didn’t stare too long, and not human as soon as you did. Its outline flickered in a slow, uneven rhythm, like a glitch in old film.

They approached carefully. Not out of fear. Nothing dangerous ever came from these events. Just unpredictable.

The figure breathed in short, uneven pulses. Its chest rose and fell like it was still deciding how breathing worked. Its face was smooth in some places and too detailed in others, like someone had sketched a person from memory but couldn’t settle on the right order.

“This isn’t one of ours,” Merrit said.

“No,” Lorin agreed. “Not a creature either.”

“So what is it.”

Before Lorin could answer, the thing lifted its head at the sound of their voices. The motion was slow, like video buffering on a bad connection. It blinked with eyes that weren’t finished. The pupils sat slightly off-center, and its expression kept trying to form something familiar but couldn’t find the alignment.

It whispered a sound. Rough, like a throat clearing in an empty room.

Merrit stepped back.

Lorin didn’t. “Do you know what you are,” he asked quietly.

It didn’t respond. It only stared, confused but not afraid.

Lorin crouched, studying the flickering edges of its form, the softening soil beneath it, the faint shimmer running across its outline. He had seen twelve of these before. Seven in the past four months. Not enough to feel routine. Too many to ignore.

“Memory construct,” he said. “Capsule malfunction. Prototype batch.”

Merrit swore under his breath. “Someone used it wrong.”

Lorin filed the report while Merrit packed the tools.
