I feel like I’ve been in these meetings many times. “I have this great idea! Here’s all the reasons to do it! Want to?” Execs: “but that’s not how we do it…”. Great piece.

What unsettled me most was that no one in the room disputed the facts. The numbers were right, the argument was right, and still none of it mattered. I think that is what made this feel so disturbingly real. Not some dramatic conspiracy, but intelligent people learning, one by one, which questions are no longer worth asking. And poor Petrie discovering that being right is not always the currency he thought it was. That stayed with me.
